Javan Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus) is the rarest mammal on earth, and this species has been classified as Critically endangered by IUCN.
There are only around 50 javan rhinos left, and there are none in zoos or captive facilities, therefore the only possible means to observe Javan rhinoceros is through direct observation in the natural habitat.
Due to delicate nature of the species, Rhino observation tour must be conducted very carefully to avoid disturbances to the rhinos and to the habitat. WWF Indonesia and Ujung Kulon National Park authority have conducted various studies to find the best possible way to observe these endangered animals.

Itinerary:

UJUNGKULON WEEK END TRIP
Friday : Jakarta - Sumur - Peucang Island
Starting Point at East Parking Senayan. We depart Jakarta at about 10 am, direct transfer to Sumur (it takes 7 hours), as arrive at Sumur we'll have breakfast at a "warung nasi" and we catch the boat for a 3 hours boat trip to Peucang Island. At about 9 o'clock the boat take you to Cibom for an easy walk to the old historical lighthouse at Tanjung Layar. Return to the island for lunch and siesta. At 4.30 the boat take you to Cidaon for wildlife watching at the savanna (not far from the beach) and if the weather is friendly the boat will bring you to the other side of Peucang Island for sunset viewing. Overnight at Flora B gueshouse. (B/L/D) Saturday: Peucang Island - Cigenter - Handeuleum Island We leave Peucang Island after breakfast, ferrying to Handeuleum Island and get to Cigenter River for canoing and trekking to the waterfall. Return to the island at about 11.30 for lunch, rest of the day is free program. Overnight at Handeuleum lodge.(B/L/D) Sunday : Handeuleum - Badul - Sumur -Jakarta After breakfast we go to Badul Island for snorkeling and after that we are ferrying to Sumur for direct transfer to Labuan and Jakarta. ADMIRE PEUCANG ITINERARY: Day 1 : JAKARTA – SUMUR – HANDEULEUM ISLAND Depart Jakarta at about 7.30 pm, direct transfer to Labuan by private chartered vehicle. Take a break in Labuan for lunch at the favorite “Warung nasi Ibu Entin”. After lunch the car is to take us directly to the last small town before the park boundary Sumur. From this place we get to Handeuleum Island by chartered wooden boat. Rest of the day is free, overnight at Handeuleum Lodge. Day 2 : HANDEULEUM ISLAND – CIGENTER RIVER – PEUCANG ISLAND Early in the morning the boat is to take us to the estuary of Cigenter, we get into the mouth of the river by a rubber boat for the amazing canoeing trip following the river. The vegetation at the both side of the river’s bank is dominated by “Nipah” palm, some kind of mangrove and low land plants. This river is one of the best place for wildlife watching in the Ujungkulon peninsula. In this locality we have more chance to see various wild animals such as: salt water crocodile, wild cattle, king fisher, hornbill, fish eagle and even Javan Rhino (if we are lucky). Return to the island at about 11.00 pm, after lunch we leave Handeuleum for Peucang Island (it takes about 2 hours). At about 4.00 am we get to Cidaon for another wild life watching at the savannah. Wild cattle, wild pig, peacock and some other birds are often found around this grazing ground. Rest of the day is free. Optional program: trekking from the lodge to Karang Copong in the northwest coast of the island to enjoy the sunset view, snorkeling at coral reef around the island or just swimming at the white sandy beach near the jetty. Stay overnight at Fauna Lodge. Day 3 : PEUCANG ISLAND - SUMUR - JAKARTA We leave Peucang Island for Sumur at about 9.00 and direct land transfer to Jakarta. End of the tour. Today’s trekking trip is ended at the ranger house to over night at Karangranjang. o Day 3 : KARANGRANJANG – LABAN – HANDEULEUM - CIGENTER Today’s trip begins with a short walk crossing the isthmus of the peninsula from Karangranjang to Laban. From Laban the boat is to take us to the estuary of Cigenter, we get into the mouth of the river by a rubber boat for the amazing canoeing trip following the river. The vegetation at the both side of the river’s bank is dominated by “Nipah” palm, some kind of mangrove and low land plants. This river is one of the best place for wildlife watching in the Ujungkulon peninsula. ITINERARY • DAY 1: JAKARTA – SUMUR – HANDEULEUM ISLAND Depart Jakarta in the morning directly to Sumur to cruise to Handeuleum Island by chartered wooden boat and then we get to Cigenter River for canoeing trip. This river is one of the best places in Ujungkulon Peninsula for Javan Rhino watching. The vegetation at the both side of the river is dominated by Nypha palm, mangrove and low land plants. In this locality we have more chance to find wild animals such as salt water crocodile (crocodilus porosus), wild cattle (bos javanicus),long tailed monkey (macacca fascicularis) and many others. Return to Handeuleum Island in the afternoon and we spend the night at Handeuleum Lodge. • DAY 2: HANDEULEUM – PEUCANG ISLAND – CIDAON The boat is to take us to Peucang Island in the morning and some monkeys will welcome us as arrival on the island. You may take pictures of the monkeys, monitor lizard and Timor deer, swim at the white sand beach or snorkeling at Sea Garden while our guide is preparing your lunch. Please be careful with the monkeys because sometimes they’re really disturbing and they often steal food on the table or even in the opened room. In the afternoon the boat will take us to Cidaon opposite of the island for wildlife watching at the savannah next to Cidaon River. Normally we can easily find some wild cattle, wild pigs, black monkey, peacock, sea eagle, hornbill and some other birds. Return to Peucang Island before dark and we overnight at Fauna Lodge. • DAY 3: PEUCANG ISLAND – TANJUNG LAYAR – TAMANJAYA We cruise the Peucang straight to unfinished harbor at Cibom for a short walk following the trail to the old light house at Tanjung Layar. Return to Peucang Island in the mid day and after lunch the boat is to take us to Tamanjaya. You can take a kampong walk and visit the workshop of rhino carving in the neighbor village Ujungjaya. Rest of the day is free and we overnight at home stay Sunda Jaya. • DAY 4: TAMANJAYA – LABUAN - JAKARTA We leave Tamanjaya for Labuan in the morning and after lunch at the popular sea food restaurant known as “Warung Ibu Entin” our car brings you back to Jakarta. Good stamina is needed to face this challenging 28 kilometers long route with the heating sun especially in dry season. In the middle of the route, there are two rivers which have to be crossed without bridges. At these two rivers, Cikeusik and Citadahan, fresh foot prints of Javan Rhino are often founded and we can take a break a few moments near the mouth of Cikeusik River before continuing the walk to Cibunar. As arrival at Cibunar in late afternon, our guide and porter are to make tent by the river’s bank of Cibunar and serving meals for dinner (B/L/D). oDay 4 : CIBUNAR – CIDAON – PEUCANG ISLAND This is the climax of the whole trekking trip in Ujungkulon peninsula. We start to walk early morning following the trail through dense primary forest up and down the hilly area and crossing some small rivers. We have bigger chance in this route to see wildlife such as: black monkey, wild boar, hornbill, wild buffalo, peacock and even Javan Rhino if you are lucky. We take a break while watching wildlife at the Cidaon savannah located just a few hundred meters before the jetty where our boat is to take us to Peucang Island. Rest of the time is free program and we stay at Fauna lodge (B/L/D) o Day 5: PEUCANG ISLAND - TAMANJAYA Free program from the morning till the afternoon, after lunch we get on the boat to cruise to Tamanjaya. Rest of the day is free and we overnight at the home stay Tamanjaya (B/L/D). o Day 6: TAMANJAYA – LABUAN – JAKARTA Our chartered vehicle is to take you back to Jakarta at about 9 o’clock in the morning and we can have lunch at the same restaurant as we visit on the first day.
